For the third of our Network Exchange commissioned projects, Full of Noises in Barrow-in-Furness will collaborate with Ilkley based experimental electronic musician Thunkist. Joined by Dance Company Knotted Project and local Cumbrian musicians, they have organised an event set to take place on 15th February 2025.

The creative team are excited to share ‘Reaching Through The Rubble’, an experimental piece exploring nature’s power to heal and restore balance as we move from chaos. Reflecting on a turbulent time for our planet, this performance will be created on the day of the performance in just 8 hours. The dancers in the performance will be triggering the sounds with their movement, as well as moving them around the space in an immersive surround sound setup.

After this Thunkist will perform ‘Radiolarians’ – a piece inspired by microscopic creatures that produce intricate shells from exotic minerals in sea water. This will be an immersive surround sound performance. The audience will get the opportunity, if they wish, to control some of the sounds with magic digital wands.

Full of Noises 

Full of Noises are an experimental music and sound art organisation based at Piel View House in the heart of Barrow Park. Their Musician’s Lab, led by composer/clarinettist Jack McNeill, is a continued professional development project for Cumbrian based musicians, exploring experimental music practices and collaborative composition.

Thunkist

Simon East (aka Thunkist) is a creative technologist, sound artist, and composer working in the field of interactive installations, dance and live music performance. He often works with surround sound as part of these pieces. Much of his work uses movement inputs from smartwatches or smartphones to trigger audio or visual responses.

Most recently Simon has been creating live music pieces where much of the music has been triggered by the audience, who are invited in to become part of the performance. Simon has also worked extensively with Pell Ensemble over the last few years to create dance pieces where the sounds are triggered by movement from the dancers.

The Knotted Project

The Knotted Project creates theatrical experiences and events, with and for young people, inspiring talent from Cumbria and beyond. The three local artists performing this evening have each been part of The Knotted Project’s Early Career Artists Program over the past 3 years.
