This year Outlands are supporting organisations, groups and artists from towns and cities across the UK including Barrow-in-Furness, Brighton, Canterbury, Falmouth, Glasgow, Hull, Ilkley, and Thamesmead. Commissions will be delivered between November 2024 and March 2025, and have been awarded to:
Safehouse Brighton x Free Range Canterbury
A new partnership between Safehouse and Free Range will bring two large groups of improvisers together for performances in Canterbury and Brighton. Each concert will include free group improvising alongside performances of John Zorn’s game piece Cobra. The structures provided by Cobra will enable the two groups to function collectively without rehearsal, and the unfamiliarity between the groups will provide fertile new material. The first concert as part of this collaboration will be delivered on 21st November as part of Free Range’s autumn season, with a follow up event at Lewes Con Club in the new year.
TACO! x Radiophrenia
Thamesmead based TACO! and Radiophrenia in Glasgow will co-commission four new sonic text experiments that consider radio broadcast as an expanded form of publishing. Four 20 minute performances will be performed as a live event called Blurt at TACO!, and broadcast live on RTM.FM (TACO!’s experimental community radio station) and Radiophrenia. Blurt considers the aural possibilities of a text, investigating how the sonic body of language reveals itself in composition, asking how a text might become a score, and what embodied resonances a disembodied radio-text produces.
Stewart Baxter
Musician and creative director Stewart Baxter will work with a range of partners in Hull, including Hull City Council’s Out of the Box project, Humber Street Gallery, and Hull University Music team, to develop a new networking event that will serve as both a performance and recording platform. Aimed at addressing a lack of opportunities for like-minded experimental musicians and artists in Hull, as well as the wider East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire area, this project will provide a new focal point in the region.
Full of Noises x Thunkist
Full of Noises in Barrow-in-Furness will collaborate with Ilkley based experimental electronic musician Thunkist, Newcastle based Surface Area Dance and local Cumbrian musicians via a series of workshops and performances using Thunkist’s Flowfal interface, which enables control of Ableton Live using motion from one or more smartphones or smartwatches.
Moogie Wonderland x Jessica Beechey
Cornwall based Moogie Wonderland and Jessica Beechey will co-deliver a new programme for children and young people exploring the acoustic possibilities of heritage spaces in the region. Exploring graphic scores, modular synthesis, and field recordings, participants will develop a site specific performance which will also be broadcast to radio.
